Growth Comes from Survivable Risk
To run effective campaigns, you have to be comfortable with taking risks before the data is clear.
Most teams say they’re “data-driven,” but what they really mean is permission-driven.
They wait until the dashboard makes the decision for them. And by the time the answer is obvious, the opportunity is usually gone.
The problem is that most marketing data is directional, and doesn’t provide a concrete answer.
Out of all experiments you’ve ever run, what proportion had a confidence level of 99%?
I see this most often in stable accounts, where performance is fine, and nothing is technically broken. But in the Change History, I only see small, reversible changes that feel very safe.
Growth, however, rarely comes from certainty.
It comes from making medium-risk decisions when the evidence is incomplete but the direction is clear.
That doesn’t mean being reckless. It means understanding the system well enough to know which risks are survivable.
And sometimes, yes, that gut feeling will be wrong.
But it’s better to take a step forward, and have to pivot when you’re wrong, than to sit on the sidelines until the perfect opportunity.
